Memories of Jack Norris

I arrived on the boat, June 20, 1945.   Assigned to her just as she came in from
having her rear end twist from a nearby mine explosion.

One of our guys was kangaroo hunting...

Boat's mascot?

Heading out to sea.

I'm facing the camera... "Smack those damn Japs outta the sky!"

Subic Bay, Philippines

Coming Home to Pearl, flags flying and relaxing on the deck.

Not bad for a new boat - 5 Man of War and 5 Merchantmen !

Guys working?

In the yards?

Our Skipper, Cmdr Johnny M. Hyde, taking a snooze in the lawn chair we gave him for birthday.
Heading to Panama...

Taking "5" before our turn to go through
the Panama Canal Zone.

Anybody need some potatoes?

"Coming through" - Balboa, Canal Zone

"Did somebody call my name?"

Pulling into Portsmouth, N.H.

Looking forward from the aft end.

Rooftop relaxing on the Portsmouth barracks.

Backing out... didn't know we were about to meet...

Their helmsman must be asleep at the wheel.   Then he pulled to starboard.

Get your helm over - shipmate`!!!

That's what happens when you're driving a U-Boat (U-873).
That's calling it pretty damn close !!!
Only a coat of paint between us.

I took this shot in utter disbelief.

That's the closest I want to see a German sub !!!

Jack Norris, S1c (FC) SS, 6/20/45 - 46
